Reading the estimate
Regional price differences are real
The same specification can move sharply between suppliers and regions. The built-in range is a July 2026 US planning baseline, not a promise about your ZIP code. Replace each low–high pair with local shelf prices or a supplier quote before committing funds.
- Lower-cost market
- Try baseline × 0.85–1.00
- National planning band
- Baseline × 1.00
- High-cost coastal market
- Try baseline × 1.15–1.35
What actually drives the material bill
Deck boards are visible, but framing, connectors, waterproofing and footings carry a large share of the budget. That is why this estimate starts with the complete structural takeoff instead of multiplying area by one decking-board price.
How to audit a contractor quote
Ask for material and labor lines separately. Check the decking product and grade, framing species and treatment, footing scope, railing, permit fees, demolition, delivery and cleanup. “Deck included” is not enough detail to compare two prices fairly.
What DIY savings really buy
DIY mainly removes paid labor and contractor overhead. In exchange, you take on layout time, tools, inspections, material handling and rework risk. The installed comparison is context for quotes—not a claim that every deck should be self-built.
Questions before comparing quotes
Why does this deck cost calculator show a range?
Retail prices vary by region, supplier, grade and season. Every line therefore has an editable low and high unit price, and those ranges flow into the subtotals and total.
Are these contractor quotes?
No. The installed comparison is a planning range using a June 2026 national rule of thumb for a basic deck. It excludes permits, demolition, unusual access and custom work. Use actual itemized local quotes for a hiring decision.
What happens when footing depth is unknown?
The calculator does not guess a frost depth. Concrete and form quantities remain marked PENDING and are excluded from the displayed range until you enter the locally verified depth.
Can I change the prices?
Yes. Every low and high unit price is an input. Enter a local shelf price or supplier quote and the group bars, material total and contractor planning comparison recalculate immediately.
