Reading a fence quote

  • Ask for materials and labor as separate lines.
  • Check post size, length and treatment (ground-contact for buried posts) and how deep they are set.
  • Check whether posts are set in concrete and how many bags per hole the quote assumes.
  • Confirm gates, hardware, removal, haul-away, permit and staining are listed or excluded.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fence cost per foot?

Angi's 2026 data puts a wood privacy fence at $27–$60 per linear foot installed, board-on-board at $15.50–$52, split-rail at $10–$30 and picket fencing at $10–$75, depending on height, wood and site.

How much does a 150 ft privacy fence cost?

At $27–$60 per foot, about $4,050–$9,000 installed, before removal of an old fence, permits, gates beyond the standard and tax.

How much are the materials if I build it myself?

Angi lists typical wood fence materials at $10–$15 per linear foot, so a 150 ft fence is roughly $1,500–$2,250 in materials.

What extra costs should I budget for?

Old fence removal ($300–$750 in Angi's data), a permit ($20–$60), gates, staining, surveys and slope or rock. Add the lines from your quote so the cost per foot stays comparable.

Why are short fences more expensive per foot?

Mobilization, end posts, gates and fixed fees are spread over fewer feet, so the same quote lines raise the per-foot number.
