| 100 ft × 3 ft | 300 sq ft | $4,500–$10,500 | $6,000–$13,500 | $7,500–$12,000 |
Installed, US national planning ranges (Angi, 2026). Excludes engineering, permits, excavation of rock and tax.
Reading a retaining wall quote
- Exposed height and buried depth should both be stated.
- Check the base: compacted gravel depth and width under the first course.
- Check drainage: gravel behind the wall and a perforated drain pipe with an outlet.
- Walls over about 4 ft: ask whether geogrid and an engineer’s design are included.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a retaining wall cost per square foot?
Angi's 2026 data per square foot of wall face, installed: interlocking concrete block $15–$35, poured concrete $20–$45, precast panels $25–$40, timber $15–$30 and natural stone $20–$100.
How much does a 40 ft long, 3 ft tall block wall cost?
120 sq ft of face at $15–$35 is about $1,800–$4,200 installed, or $45–$105 per linear foot.
How many retaining wall blocks do I need?
Blocks per course = wall length ÷ block face length, rounded up; courses = exposed height ÷ block height, rounded up, plus any buried course. A 40 ft × 3 ft wall with 12 × 4 in blocks and one buried course needs 40 × 10 = 400 blocks.
Does a retaining wall need a permit?
Walls over about 4 ft commonly need a permit and an engineered design. Check with your building department before you price it.
